TEMPLES - OUR ART & CULTURE

As bastions of art, culture and spirituality, temples are the backbone of life in India. Rekha Vijayashankar captures the myriad facets of these establishments through her photographs of temples. Her photographs focus on the ancient sculptures and murals found in temples as well as on the lived beliefs that take place in the backdrop of these temples.  A photographer with DakshinaChitra, these images are her effort to document the rich cultural heritage of the country. At the same time, these photographs also reflect her desire to go back in time and experience a more indigenous way of life.

VESHAM - An Exhibition of South Indian Folk dance

Vesham an exhibition of photographs of folk performances from south India taken at Dakshinachitra. I took these photographs during various folk performances that happened at the center. The inauguration was on the 13.03.2013 by Dr Chithra Madhavan, a famous art historian,a writer and my well wisher. The exhibition was organized by Artist,Film maker and Programme co-ordinator Gita Hudson. This was my first formal exhibition in a gallery. I have clicked pictures of many inaugurations at the gallery, but never pictured myself exhibiting my photographs here. Being the first time i was very nervous and excited. Being at the center stage made me understand the state of mind of each artist.

All set for inauguration
